South Lawn (White House)

The South Lawn, located to the south of the White House in Washington, D.C., is an important part of the grounds of the U.S. presidential residence. It borders East Executive Drive and the Treasury Building to the east, West Executive Drive and the Old Executive Office Building to the west, and South Executive Drive and the public park known as the Ellipse to the south.

Before the start of World War II, the South Lawn was open to the general public. Today, it is a restricted area of the White House. Both official and informal events are held here, including ceremonies for welcoming foreign delegations, the annual Easter Egg Roll, and staff barbecues. In addition, it serves as the landing and takeoff site for Marine One, the helicopter used by the President.
